PORTFOLIO

Oakham, Rutland

A young family undertook significant renovations and extensions to their home to better accommodate their lifestyle and growing children. To help complete some of the newly designed spaces, my client initially approached a local interior design studio. However, while the studio provided a substantial quote, my client had a clear vision of what she wanted—she just needed support in bringing those ideas to life.

Item one focused on creating a relaxed and charming set of linen interlined curtains for the French doors leading from the dressing room to a rooftop balcony. These doors frame a breath taking countryside view, so the window treatments needed to complement, rather than compete with, the scenery. The curtains featured a soft stripe contrast lining and were finished with delicate pastel pom poms along the edges. Inspiration was drawn from recently installed pastel green wardrobes and a geometric rug rich with soft, playful colours. Given the informal, family-oriented nature of the home, a rustic cottage pleat was chosen—it suited the easy going character of the linen and added a touch of whimsy. The contrast lining offered a playful surprise when drawn, and the generously pooled curtain bottoms offer an inviting spot for little fingers and toes to disappear beneath.

The dressing room seamlessly flows into the master bedroom through a grand archway. While the two rooms are visually connected, each maintains its own distinct personality. We wanted to create harmony between the spaces without duplicating elements. To achieve this, we used the striped contrast lining from the curtains as the base fabric for a set of Roman blinds in the bedroom. These were bordered with a complementary trim and finished with matching pom poms along the lower edge. For practicality, the blinds were lined with blackout fabric—ensuring restful sleep and moments of well-deserved peace and quiet.

Bespoke furnishings often leave behind offcuts and spare fabric lengths—an ideal opportunity to embrace sustainability. Cushions are a perfect way to repurpose these materials, and in this case, a super king-size bed provided the perfect stage for a striking lumbar duck feather cushion, which truly became a standout feature in the room.

To add a feminine touch to the dressing area, we created a large-format bow using the remaining fabric—an elegant and playful detail that brought just the right amount of charm and character to the space.

One of the major extensions transformed the kitchen into a spacious open-plan area that now includes a utility space, dog wash station, dining area, and a cosy TV seating zone—all flowing seamlessly out onto a beautifully landscaped patio and garden. This expansive room features two impressive 4-metre-wide bifold doors that flood the space with natural light during the day. However, by nightfall, the openness could feel a bit stark and lacking in privacy. Due to limited wall space on either side of the doors, there wasn’t room for full, interlined curtains. Instead, we opted for a more streamlined solution: elegant, lightweight curtains lined with a simple poly-cotton sateen. The face fabric featured a delicate stripe pattern in soft pink and green, echoing the gentle tones of the space. As with other areas of the home, this room is designed for relaxed, everyday living, so we continued the theme of comfort and informality by using a rustic cottage pleat—a perfect match for the room’s warm, family-friendly atmosphere.
